Bronze is a noble alloy composed mainly of copper and tin. Used since antiquity, it remains one of the best-valued metals in recycling due to its high copper content. At Bull Metal, we systematically verify the composition of your pieces to distinguish real bronze from brass or zamak.

Bronze Scrap
Industrial, mechanical and foundry bronze: bushings, bearings and miscellaneous components
Bronze Scrap covers a family of copper-based alloys traditionally associated with copper and tin. Depending on the application, bronze may also contain elements such as lead, aluminium or phosphorus, so not all bronze scrap has exactly the same composition. Typical bronze scrap includes bushings, bearings, bearing shells, gears, gear rings, wear parts, valve bodies, mechanical components, castings and foundry scrap. Marine applications also generate propellers, fittings and propulsion components. Common sources include factories, machine shops, industrial maintenance companies, foundries, machinery manufacturers, shipyards and industrial dismantling projects, as well as machining offcuts and replaced mechanical components. At Bull Métal, bronze should be kept separate from brass, copper and ferrous scrap. Steel shafts, bolts, screws, inserts and other foreign materials should be removed whenever possible. Clean machining chips and turnings may also be graded according to their condition and preparation. Bronze is generally darker than yellow brass, ranging from golden brown to reddish brown. A magnet can help rule out steel, but it cannot reliably distinguish bronze from brass or copper. Light filing or scratching may help reveal the underlying metal colour. Special alloys such as aluminium bronze, phosphor bronze and leaded bronze may require separate assessment because their composition and scrap value can differ from conventional bronze. Bull Métal tip: keep bronze, brass and copper in separate containers whenever possible. Correct segregation helps prevent higher-value material from being downgraded.
