An alloy of copper and zinc, brass is a highly sought-after metal for its high value. It is found in plumbing fixtures, fittings, locksmithing and decorative parts. Its value depends directly on its copper content — the higher it is, the better the purchase price.

Mixed Brass
Taps, fittings, valves and miscellaneous brass parts
Mixed Brass includes a wide range of recovered brass parts from plumbing, heating, construction, maintenance and industrial equipment. Typical material includes taps, fittings, valves, nuts, plumbing components and various cast or machined brass parts. This material can come from plumbers, heating contractors, tradespeople, demolition companies, maintenance operations, factories and industrial production scrap. At Bull Métal, Mixed Brass may contain up to 2% impurities. Flexible hoses, plastics, rubber, steel, aluminium and other attached materials should therefore be removed as much as possible before delivery. We separate our brass grades according to their condition: clean yellow brass tubes and solid bars are purchased as Yellow Brass, while chrome-plated brass components are classified separately as Chrome-Plated Brass. Bull Métal tip: removing hoses, plastic handles and larger steel parts before delivery can significantly improve the cleanliness and classification of a brass load.

Chrome-Plated Brass
Zinc-aluminum alloy, handles, cast parts
Chrome-Plated Brass is commonly found in taps, mixer taps, fittings, valves and sanitary equipment. Beneath the bright silver finish, the main body is generally brass covered with a thin chrome coating. This type of scrap is regularly generated by plumbers, heating contractors, renovation companies, demolition contractors and maintenance professionals when bathrooms, kitchens and sanitary installations are replaced. An important characteristic of this grade is that the complete item is not always made entirely of brass. Handles, levers and other attached components may be made from Zamak, a zinc-based alloy, as well as plastic or other metals. As a result, the overall brass content is generally lower than in a well-prepared Mixed Brass load, which explains its lower scrap value. At Bull Métal, Chrome-Plated Brass is therefore sorted separately from Mixed Brass and clean Yellow Brass. Bull Métal tip: a silver-coloured tap is not necessarily stainless steel. Lightly filing the main body may reveal the yellow-gold colour of brass underneath, but handles and attached parts may still be made from Zamak or other materials.

Yellow Brass
Clean yellow brass tubes, solid bars and production offcuts
Clean Yellow Brass, also traded internationally in clean production grades such as New Yellow Brass, consists mainly of clean brass tubes, solid bars, profiles and manufacturing offcuts. Brass is an alloy primarily made from copper and zinc, easily recognised by its characteristic yellow-gold appearance. Its exact copper and zinc content varies depending on the alloy and its intended industrial application. This grade is commonly generated as factory scrap, production offcuts, machining scrap and manufacturing waste from industrial plants, machining workshops, metalworking companies, plumbing manufacturers and businesses processing brass products. At Bull Métal, this category is reserved for clean yellow brass. Material should be free from steel, aluminium, plastic, rubber, excessive solder and other foreign materials. Taps, valves, fittings and mixed components are generally classified as Mixed Brass, while chrome-plated parts are sorted separately as Chrome-Plated Brass. Bull Métal tip: if the surface is dull or oxidised, lightly file a small area. Clean yellow brass should reveal its characteristic yellow-gold colour underneath. For larger industrial loads or uncertain alloys, the material can be checked to ensure the correct grade and valuation.

Brass Water Meters
Brass-bodied water meters, valued according to preparation level
Brass Water Meters are mainly built around a solid brass body, combined with an internal measuring mechanism, plastic parts, sometimes glass, steel and, on newer models, electronic components. They are commonly recovered during water-network replacement, plumbing work, building refurbishment, maintenance, strip-out and demolition projects. At Bull Métal, preparation directly affects classification and value. A complete meter with its internal mechanism is purchased as a Brass Water Meter. If the meter is fully dismantled and all plastic, glass, steel, internal mechanism and other foreign materials are removed, only the clean solid brass body remains. In that case, the clean body may be reclassified as Clean Yellow Brass / First-Grade Brass, which carries a higher value at Bull Métal. Bull Métal tip: if you regularly recover meters, fully dismantling them can significantly improve the grade. Keep only the clean brass body and remove lithium batteries before storage or delivery.
